Infinitely Intersecting Orbits
Tetherball sets, custom hardware
10' x 14' diameter, each
A grid of 16 tetherball sets is placed within the grounds of this urban park. Each tetherball set stands ten feet high and has a leather tetherball attached to the end of a seven-foot rope. Unlike normal tetherball sets, the tops of these posts spin on custom, ball bearing caps. Thus the tether never winds itself around the post. It endlessly spins and there is no winning. The large grid measures fourteen feet between posts. At one point, the infinitely spinning orbits will collide with the orbiting tethers adjacent to it.
Infinitely Intersecting Orbits was commissioned by the Toronto Sculpture Garden for exhibition in the winter of 2002.
